Thanks for joining me. Today’s topic is about nurturing your marriage.
The importance of nurturing your marriage is as important as making the commitment itself. Nurturing your marriage safe guards your future as husband and wife. I like to remind couples that it is up to them to make sure that they are taking the steps to reinforce the vows that they made.
Often times, after children come, our alone time together with our spouses is the first thing off the table. Being a counselor I am constantly asking my couples if they are doing the weekly date night. Most times the answer I get is sadly “no”. Couples need to understand that they’re headed down a bumpy road if they will not take the time to have special moments of time alone as husband and wife. You must step out of the role as parents and honor your commitment to each other. If you don’t sooner or later your relationship will feel the disconnect.
Below are some suggestions to help you get started nurturing your marriage:
1. Schedule a weekly date night and honor that day.
2. Don’t allow your date night day to be the first place you turn to fit something into your schedule. Think of your date night as one of the most important things that you do.
3. Be creative in your time together. Keep in mind you don’t have to spend money to have a date night. Doing things at home can be a blast.
Here are just a few ideas:
- Cook a special meal together and eat it by candle light.
- Slow dance in the kitchen.
- Take a walk together and hold hands.
- Spend time on a porch swing and enjoy each others company.
4. Try to plan a weekend get away every 6 months or sooner if you can.
5. Sit down and do a “couple’s bucket list” of things you want to enjoy together and pick from that list when you get free time.
6. Make goals for your future together. Do 3 to 5 year goals and then long term goals like 10 years out. Future goals shows you are in it for the long haul. The goals are a blue print of what’s to come.
I pray that this blog helps those of you who have gotten off course with spending time together. My prayer is for you as a couple to take time to implement special time together as soon as you can and then step out and have fun.
God bless you!
